When I ask for information about what the hardest part of working online is for my followers, the same answer comes up again and again.
Team building, or getting referrals, is perhaps top of the list in the struggle most people face when working online.
Today I want to provide some specific guidance to help overcome this issue.
There are 2 main areas that will help you to get more referrals:
- Improving traffic generation
- Improving personal marketing skills
Improving Traffic Generation
The first thing you should aim to do is learn how to generate traffic in an effective way. This DOES NOT mean getting as much traffic as you can. Most people make the mistake of trying to get as many hits as possible to their referral links. This does not work for many different reasons, mainly it is chaotic and unstructured, but it also is very time-consuming and hard to manage.
Also sending traffic directly to a referral link is the most ineffective method of promoting. I will explain more about that later…. for now let me focus purely on the traffic generation side of things.
Traffic generation is NOT simply a numbers game. You and I could both send the same amount of traffic to the same link and chances are I would still get a higher response rate. This is because I have built up a reputation for sharing good and useful information over many years. In other words my name alone means something in this industry.
You cannot build a solid reputation by sharing a link on as many different traffic sites as you can manage. Instead you should focus on using ONE traffic site and learning more about the members there. Spend the time learning what works on that site AND allow the members to get to know you.

With your advertising system you want to work in a way that aims for CONSISTENCY. For example you could begin by giving yourself a target of 50 hits per day from the SAME traffic site. Make sure you achieve that goal every single day. DO NOT send traffic direct to your referral link, you need to use either a lead capture page or a blog post link. This is the part about improving your marketing skills.
Improving Your Marketing Skills
The amount of traffic that you are sending to a page or link is NOT the most important factor. It is what happens to that traffic when they arrive at your page that makes the difference to what happens next.
IF the person is interested in what you are sharing you STILL need to be able to follow up with them later. Sending them direct to a referral link usually does not allow for that to happen.
You need to be able to communicate with your referrals, to provide guidance and support.
EXPLAINING how a site works, and recommending specific ways to use it will result in a lot more referrals who are active on the site. It is the INFORMATION you provide that is the vital ingredient.
Instead of spending all your time focusing on getting as much traffic as possible to your link, spend the time focusing on the kind of information you provide. Doing this results in a MUCH HIGHER rate of conversion into referrals who actually use a site.
When you focus on providing good quality information then it will take a LOT LESS traffic for you to get referrals.
In other words the effort you have to make on a daily basis is a lot lower, a lot more managable, and it will get you much improved results. It might take a little more effort initially, but in the end you work a lot less to get better results.
This is why I keep saying over and over again that writing a blog is one of the most effective marketing strategies. It helps you to stand out from others in this hugely overcrowded space for a start. It allows you to focus on providing the information that people are literally crying out for in this industry AND it generates traffic all on its own…….
